Transfer Policy - GCSD #9 parents may request a change in elementary school placement for the 2013-2014 school year. Approval is contingent upon space in the requested building and often we cannot accommodate all family members if there are a number of children. Approval for change in placement is not final until the sixth day of enrollment. Parents should indicate the reason for their request. The deadline for submission of transfer requests for the 2013-2014 school year is JUNE 1, 2013. Requests must be made annually. Transfer requests may be sent to the child's school or the Board of Education Office, 1947 Adams Street. Continued approval during the school year of the request is contingent upon satisfactory attendance and behavior. Parents are responsible for transportation to and from the requested school. There are no transfer options for students in Grades 5 - 12 since all classes at each of these respective grade levels are housed in one building.

Policy 7:30 - Transfers Within the District A student's parent(s)/guardian(s) may request a transfer for their child to a District school other than the one assigned. A request should be directed to the Superintendent, who, at his or her sole discretion, may grant the request when the parent(s)/guardian(s) demonstrate that the student could be better accommodated at another school, provided space is available. If a request is granted, the parent/guardian shall be responsible for transportation. The provisions in this section have no applicability to transfers pursuant to: (1) Title I covered in Board policy 6:15, School Accountability, or (2) the Unsafe School Choice Option covered in Board policy 4:170, Safety.

Granite City School District #9 Finalizes Redistricting Plan

The Granite City School District #9 Board of Education took action at their April 16, 2013 meeting to complete the 13.14 Redistricting Plan.  With the closing of Niedringhaus School, all current Kindergarten - Third Grade students attending there will be reassigned to Frohardt, Prather, Wilson and Worthen Schools.  In order to provide space for these students, the Fourth and Fifth Grade students from all elementary buildings have been assigned to Grigsby Intermediate Center for Fifth and Sixth Grade respectively.  Some students from Frohardt, Wilson and Worthen were reassigned by neighborhoods to group geographic areas and adjust class sizes. Kindergarten registration for the coming year has been taking place.  This information will now be incorporated into projected enrollment numbers.

Individual notification to parents is being made with the target goal of informing all impacted parties by the end of April 2013.  The district continues to offer parents the option of an in-district transfer with no transportation provided by the district.  Many parents request transfers due to child care providers.  This process is done annually and is approved on a space available basis.  There is no guarantee from year to year of an approved transfer.  Students who were moved under the previous Public School Choice program have some additional options available by federal law until the exit grade level at the school.  The exit grade level at all elementary schools has now become Fourth Grade.  Written notification is being provided to all impacted parties.

Opportunities for families to visit the new schools will be available in August 2013 prior to the start of school year.
